Last night I had the opportunity to attend a community meeting at The Way of Truth Church in Pleasant Grove. The meeting centered around the beautiful new extension campus of Eastfield Community College being built in the heart of Pleasant Grove. The "community campus" is located on Buckner Blvd and is a wonderful addition to our community! There will even be a community room for groups in the community to meet and host functions.
One of the large concerns in the City of Dallas, even moreso in the Pleasant Grove area is that of education. What better way to bring some concentrated attention and help with education than to put a first class educational institution right in the midst of the community. Two of the three high schools out here have either been re-organized or shut down as a result of low performance. I believe this is an excellent opportunity for the Community College District to embrace the community and the community to embrace the Community College, thus resulting in a magnificent educational love affair! I look forward to more high school students taking advantage of the dual enrollment option and the possibility to complete college coursework (and receive credit) while in high school! And the DCCCD offers these classes to the students for FREE!!!
The extension campus will offer certificate programs, continuing education classes and basic college courses (i.e. reading, writing, math). The hispanic population in Pleasant Grove is greater than 50 percent and the DCCCD system recognized this and will asl have a heavy concentration on ESL and ESOL classes. The administration is very open to the community's input and have formed an advisory committee comprised of members from the committee. The first meeting will be held in a couple of weeks and if you are interested please contact Mr. Javier Olguin, Executive Director, if you are interested in serving.
The chancellor of the DCCCD system spoke at the meeting as well as the interim President and the Executive Director of the campus. They are very excited about being in the Grove and it is my hope the we too, will get behind the project and support it! I too plan to take a class or two at the campus! We must applaud and support good business that cares enough to invest in our community!

WHY CONTINUE TO SHOW UP FOR THE FIGHT?
This is the tile of a sermon a good friend of mine preached on August 24, 2008 and the three baptist points were:
1. Because my community needs me
2. Because AIN'T nobody else stepping up
3. Because there's more to my fight than meets the eye
The sermon blessed me then and blesses me even now! Thank you Pastor Batson!
As I visit with my neighbors and discuss the things that plague us as a community, contrary to what is being reported in this city, VIOLENT crime is rising in Dallas City Council District Five!
Just tonight, we lost a dedicated and devoted Dallas Police Officer..right INside the corridor of District FIVE!
Just a few weeks ago a body was found murdered..in District FIVE!
Just a few days before that a life was lost in a failed bank robbery attempt...in District FIVE!
And the LIST DOES GROW LONG...
While crime appears to be going down in the city overall (and that is wonderful news), SADLY and NEEDLESSLY it IS on the rise in District FIVE!
I can not adequately express the pain my heart feels when I think about the wife and kids left to mourn the death of Senior Cpl. Norman Smith and countless other lives lost!
When does the bleeding stop? When does the violence stop? When does someone stand up and call for action?
I am reminded of my days in high school when I not only participated in, but led the charge on organizing town hall meetings and teen summits and hosting teen talk shows to address the out of control problem of gang violence in Dallas. As a result of my work around the city, Eazy Street featured me on many occasions as a guest host of his Monday night talk show on 100.3 Jamz titled : What's Goin' On. Positive progress by way of gang truces and a reduction in gang violence came as the result of some strong and successful collaborations.
Once again, violent crime is rising in the youth population (as both the offender and the offended) and once again we will collaborate as a collective community to effect change amongst US!
Again, the question is why continue to show up for the fight?
After others dog you out...
After others question your call...
After others question your motives...
After others attempt to ruin your reputation...
After others sit back and do NOTHING...
I WILL CONTINUE to show up for the fight to make a difference in my community and as David said (sermonic reference) ...don't let the babyface fool you...and I implore you to show up with me and beside me and let's work together to turn OUR community around TODAY!
The need is too great and the future too bright!

TO GET SOMETHING YOU NEVER HAD, YOU HAVE TO DO SOMETHING YOU NEVER DID!!!
Well, the word is out...I am running for Dallas City Council in District FIVE! I have heard a lot already that I will NOT comment on, but will continue my commitment to remain focused on the people! I chose to run after personally experiencing no commitment, compassion or concern for the grave issues we are experiencing in District FIVE.
I was born and raised in Dallas (in the heart of Pleasant Grove and the Bottoms) and have long desired to run for office and serve the people where I raised and that have poured so much into me and had much to do with molding me into who I am today.
The last I checked you didn't have to be granted permission from anyone to run for public office, you didn't have to wait until a prescribed time period to run...you only had to meet the qualifications set forth in the law of the jurisdiction from which you seek office and have a heart and desire to serve!
My passion and purpose in life reflect service to the community and I look forward to ALWAYS serving the community. My commitment is to focus on FIVE and bring much needed attention to the district in all areas that have been neglected and ignored for far too many years and to do so by bringing a fresh face with fresh energy and ideas that will lead to a fresh future!
We are hurting as a community family. We are dying as a community family. We are in desperate and dire need as a community family.
When does the healing begin? When does new life begin? When does drive and determination move in?
The day that you AND I jump on board and work together for the common good of OUR community and demand respect in OUR community!

A Change Is Gonna Come...
Is it really???!!!
Well, I am finally coming off my hiatus! I have taken some time off from blogging to volunteer with Obama Dallas to ensure a victory, to celebrate my 30th birthday, to volunteer my time with some local non profits and to diligently serve my community through my service on the Park Board.
I have also taken time to do some traveling the last few months and my time away proved to provide many eye opening experiences. (I'll blog about that next week)...remind me :)
I was away from the city last week to support my college in a gridiron battle with our biggest rival, Bethune Cookman College (BCC). FAMU won the game and more importantly won the battle of the bands (Halftime show) hands down! And rightfully so, the Marching 100 (who now stand over 400 people strong) were tapped weeks ago to perform for the historical inauguration of our 44th President, Barack Obama.
More importantly, while I was away, the life of a wonderful woman was celebrated on the same day that I was celebrating a win for FAMU. I briefly heard the news story the week before I left of a young lady that was gunned down in her car, minutes from my home, as she drove to work early one morning. However, I did not realize that I knew this young woman until I read Mike D's blog posts today. Wyshina Harris was a sweet and caring woman that I was blessed to cross paths with through her work with an after school program and my service as the District 4 park board representative. The after school program operated out of Turner Courts in sunny South Dallas where I was afforded the opportunity to attend high school and the ladies that worked that program really made a difference in the students lives and the community around them. Wyshina invited me over to speak for career day last Spring and I will never forget her son's questions of me. She also made sure that the students properly greeted me each time that I visited. She was a class act! It pains my heart that something this tragic would take her from her family and friends and strip her from changing the futures of the many kids that she would go on to work with. God makes no mistakes and I am made all the better to have crossed paths with her! You can read about Wyshina Harris here and here. I am still a little jaded about this news, yet another senseless crime in the Grove and in this City! If you choose to donate to her memorial fund, please know that it will make a difference in the lives of others and keep your ears and eyes open..if you have any information about this crime, please report it!
Is a change coming? I certainly think so, but it starts with each of us making strides and taking steps to make changes..life altering and life sustaining changes...

"This victory alone is not the change we seek, it is only the chance for us to make that change and that cannot happen if we go back to the way things were..it can't happen without you..without a new spirit of service, a new spirit of sacrifice..so let us summon a new spirit..where each of us resolves to pitch in and work harder and look after not only ourselves but each other.."
I am and I will continue to do my part...

Praise Explosion..

The Simple Things..and not so simple things...
After a long and challenging day...and after a lllooonnnggg game of Uno with my nephew, he came up behind me tonight and said, "I wanna do something I haven't done in a long time"..and I was half working on the computer and half listening to him. Then he asked me to turn around and look and he gave me a great big hug! I melted...then he followed up with an "oh I forgot something else" and gave me a kiss!
The simple pleasures and joys of life! And it came at just the right time! The innocence of children..thanks Kev! AAAHHHHHHH!!!! :)
Now on to the not so simple things...
TOMORROW IS ALMOST HERE AND IT WILL BE ELECTION DAY IN THE GREAT STATE OF TEXAS!
If you have not voted, PLEASE I AM BEGGING YOU to go VOTE tomorrow! The polls are open from 7am until 7pm.
For those of us that handled our business during early voting, PLEASE I AM BEGGING YOU to return to your precinct polling location to get your CAUCUS on tomorrow at 7pm!
You can call 866-675-2008, ext. 4 or go to http://www.dalcoelctions.org/ to get the information you need on where your voting/ caucus location is.
The Texas Two Step has been in place before this primary came about, but never have so many people participated in the primaries election nor have people cared to be as deeply involved in the overall process as they are now and cared to go back to their precinct convention (caucus). Precinct chairs have had to call friends to get delegates chosen in the past because no one cared to show back up after 7pm.
I have been an avid voter since I was of age to vote and a self proclaimed political junkie since before that..and MOST of my friends and some colleagues have NEVER wanted to hear me talk politics (although they listened to me or pretended to listen). So I am beyond elated to see so many of them now participating in the process, educating themselves on how the world of politics functions & becoming engaged in and versed on the issues and so much more!
On March 4, 2008, let us BaRack the Vote and paint the state Blue for Obama!
I had the opportunity to both meet and share in conversation with some good people while in Obama's Dallas Headquarters this past Saturday, amongst the group...the 4th African American Best Actor Academy Award winner (and native Texan) and his lovely wife (who wanted to take my "Hot Chicks Dig Obama" button with her!)...
until tomorrow night...

I've NEVER been more proud to be a leftie...
In case you didn't notice... Barack is also a leftie and makes me proud to know that the intelligent people are lefties! :) It is okay for me to be proud of that fact, isn't it?
Well, I went to Obama's rally at the Reunion Arena last week and words can not describe the electricity in that place and even flowing outside of the arena! There were young children in tow, teenagers, college students, young adults, middle aged adults and the seasoned saints were in tha house!!
Obama spoke of hope and his plans for change and was inspiring to me (both for the now and as it relates to my future endeavors) to say the least. I don't understand the critics that say he is all air and puff and contains no substance....hhmmmm..haters maybe?
I also had the pleasure to attend his Town Hall meeting yesterday afternoon in Duncanville. It started out with his usual speech (minus a few new additions)...but things took a turn when he ended his speech earlier than normal and entertained questions from the audience!
This was an exciting time for me because naturally questions were asked AND ANSWERED that had never been dealt with in any of the debates or in any pre-produced campaign materials. Great questions were asked (the highlight for many was when Obama called on a high school student and the volunteers didn't get the mike to him quickly enough, so Obama went to him and gave him his mike- a moment I am sure that the young man will never forget) and it was even more exhilarating to see Obama genuinely answer the questions. And as Deputy Mayor Pro Tem Caraway pointed out to me during this period, Obama looked each and every last one of them straight in their eyes as he answered their questions! (No matter how far back they may have been sitting from him) Gotta love a politician that deals with you eye to eye on the issues before them!!
Although I did not necessarily experience the same feeling that ran through the arena last week, it was still a packed house and overflowing people outside that couldn't get in and fired up people ready for TRUE and LASTING change!
As we left the building I took a momentary low as we were approached by Clinton campaign workers! I understand that the crowds for both Hill and Bill in Dallas County can not seem to get out of the hundreds, but I can not believe the unmitigated gall (shout out to Pastor Haynes..lol) of them to be standing right outside the arena doors of the Obama Town Hall meeting! It was disrespectful and pitiful!
That low only lasted a minute, because I was reminded that Obama WILL win Dallas county and their tactics were yet another attempt at bringing Obama and his supporters down!
I concluded my evening with some slammin' fried chicken, catfish and fries at Emerald City on MLK. (who knew!!!)
Obama quickly left the arena headed to catch a flight to Austin as he was due to speak in San Marcos at 9:15 p.m. My lil sis made it to the rally in San Marcos outside at a park and snagged herself a front row seat without waiting in the long line!

Tomorrow is the last day of early voting and the polls are open until 7 p.m. Let your voice be heard and please be sure to complete the second part of the Texas Two Step and return to your neighborhood voting location on Tuesday, March 4 at 7 p.m. for the precinct convention and get your caucus on!

Rock YOUR Vote...
I realize that Texas is in the dead heat of their primaries election, but for those of your that have not yet registered to vote and also like to have a great time....
may I suggest to you an event taking place this Friday evening. Some good friends of mine will be hosting a Rock the Vote Mixer. They are better known as Cajun Family Entertainment and you've partied with them, now they want you to come out and get your vote on! The mixer is also sponsored by several other groups and several HBCU alumni associations.
This will be a voter registration drive..there will be music, FREE food and drinks for purchase ;)
The deadline has passed to register for the primaries, however please get registered in time to vote in the November election!

ok..so I just wanted to put my 10 years of French classes (7th grade through college) to use..
But I am on vacation! I've been in Atlanta since last week and have been having a blast..
I came down for the Twins (my college roomies) 30th B-Day celebration..
and I've had the opportunity to visit with old friends, new friends, mentee's and distant family members..
however, while enjoying my time off and away from Dallas, one of my dictators informed me that I need to continue updating my blog. So here goes...
I just read that the early vote numbers continue to set records and I beg of you to continue to go early vote, take your family and friends to go early vote (my grandmother called me Friday to ask me to take her and I sadly told her I was not in town but would take her as soon as I got back!) and PLEASE PARTICIPATE IN THE PRECINCT CONVENTION!
SIDE NOTE: Don't continue to be hoodwinked and led astray by anyone (including any local elected official or state elected official that tells you that you don't need to attend the precinct convention [caucus as you may call it])-

One noticeable difference is that Obama believes in us and has consistently and convincingly hired staff of a younger generation that have fresh and innovative mindsets! I'm excited about that and excited to know that he values the future while paying attention to the past! It's an exciting day and more about that after my siesta and relajación!
Vote for the one that believes in PRO- activeness, PRO- gression, but most importantly vote your conscience!

Well, as endorsements are coming in daily with the State of Texas positioned in a place of importance. There is a great deal at stake and an important number of delegates to be gained here in the GREAT state of TEXAS! I am still on a high after hearing Barack Obama's speech last night, but more about that later...
Also local elections taking place and local campaigning going on around us for the November election. Pay close attention to how your local elected officials react and respond to certainly all things, but more importantly to this Presidential election. Ask yourself, do they embody the same values as yourself, do they support the same candidate as yourself, do they stand for the same ideas and morals as yourself, do they go against the grain and the desires of the majority of their constituents? I won't continue the path of some of my elders and tear down my people, but I ask you to search yourself...and if your elected official does NOT line up with you, then cast your vote accordingly when they are up for re-election. Or better yet, enter the race yourself!
Until your MINDSET (thanks Obama!) becomes free...

FAT Tuesday..SUPER Tuesday...BLUE Tuesday...
They are celebrating in Louisiana..and we will be celebrating here in Dallas tonight...Happy FAT TUESDAY to you all! Hope to see some of you tonight!
It is also SUPER Tuesday..and primaries are going down in over 20 states (not Texas) today! For my friends in participating SUPER Tuesday states, PLEEEAAAAZZZZEEE go vote today!!! I'll tell you I could not be more ready to BaRACK the Vote than I am right now!!! The list of reasons as to why stretches for me...but if you know me, you know how much I detest calling Dell for tech support! I am almost always guaranteed to have to deal with someone overseas who understands none of what I say and vice versa! (they always wanna notate my account that I'm an irate American..WTH?!!!?!!) It frustrates me highly!!! Well, amongst other things that Barack takes the lead on, he has taken the lead and was the first Presidential candidate to speak out on taking tax breaks away from these companies that choose to outsource their call centers and other operations overseas!!!! Go BARACK!!!! I support him for many other reasons as well!
And as I think about Barack and having the audacity to hope..I am saddened and having a BLUE Tuesday as I recall the events of the Dallas ISD school board meeting last Thursday! There seemed to be no hope for the future as I listened to the trustees conduct the business of the school district.
I really do not even know where to start as I sat for 4 hours in sheer disgust and disbelief as to what was taking place before my eyes. There seemed to be no order for most of the meeting, with the parliamentarian not speaking up and clearly defining rules and giving some order to the meeting. I'm going to try not to call names, but several of the trustees disrespected the speakers and their fellow colleagues with an audience FULL of young, impressionable students! What an example they set..and throughout the meeting they talked about building morale in the students and having a model for excellence, but it is best to lead by example DALLAS ISD SCHOOL BOARD!
The President of the school board voted the wrong way several times and each time had to ask for a re-vote because he hit the wrong button..what is so difficult about hitting Y or N Mr. President? After all of the public patiently sat and waited for hours through the insanity, Mr. President, Jack Lowe, decided he would leave the meeting just at the point of the public speakers (with no explanation for his early dismissal). One of the students from Skyline burst out in tears and later told me how disrespected she felt by him doing so..and it seems that this move is nothing new...
Trustee Carla Ranger hung in there and fought HARD ALL NIGHT long from issues dealing with not limiting the time for public speakers at meetings to addressing the changing of grades (as mandated by the district policy! vs. punishing schools for doing the very same thing) to very crucial policies that will affect all of our children! I must say THANK YOU (I also was reminded of why I try hard not to listen to what others say about people and experience them in action for myself!) for hanging in there even when she could not so much as get a second on her amendments from her colleagues at times. Hats off to Dr. Blackburn as well, for being quick on his research and coming to Ms. Ranger's aid and championing his own issues as well!
To the students that spoke from Skyline- JOB WELL DONE! I was so proud to see you all speak with passion and intelligence and represent and advocate for what you believe to be right! You all have been mislead and that is all I will say about that! So keep fighting the good fight! I commend the parents and students that used their creativity in speaking up for their school and finding ways to push Skyline's name in other areas of the agenda (the haters tried to stop you- but you prevailed and conquered the red tape and bureaucracy!)
I was fighting back tears as I walked out of that meeting after 10 p.m. to know that children's lives- our future- rest in these folks hands making such integral policies. I was not pleased with Trustees that acted uninterested, laughed at their colleagues suggestions and basically had utter disregard for the business at hand throughout the night.
Props to the parent that pulled the LAW out on them! When all else fails...as it was said many times throughout the night..if the fight has to go to the ballot box or the courthouse, I encourage you all to do it until your voice is heard and a righteous decision is made!
There was a parent that spoke about her child having sexual harassment issues (amongst many other issues) at her ELEMENTARY SCHOOL! She also talked about the school having a closed campus policy for parents. I simply don't understand how we talk about increasing parental participation in our kids lives and we block the parents off, as I was also told is the case for eating lunch with your child at C. A. Tatum in Pleasant Grove. Is this what we have allowed OUR public school system to become?? I remember the day, as a DISD student, when my mother had the right (and she exercised it when she chose :)) to come sit in on class, come to a school program and come eat lunch with her child(ren) if she wanted to! It starts from the top people, with the leadership and trickles on down to each and every school campus!
As a successful product of the Dallas I.S.D., I thought I'd never be one of the parents to say this, but I must say, that God willing I will not be enrolling my future child(ren) in the mismanaged Dallas I.S.D. - -unless a change comes!
But what I will do is be sure to bring my peanuts to feed the elephants and have my mind right for a 6 ring circus the next trustee meeting that I show up to!

Another One Bites the Dust...
As of today...Southern Comfort Motel MUST close! The City of Dallas ordered the motel closed after a series of hearings and resistance and fight from the owners. This is yet another of the drug infested, prostitute filled filthy motels located in our community.
The owners of Southern Comfort appealed to district court after they lost their fight with the City. The judge today after weeks of waiting, finally issued his decision..and the judge sided with the city and most importantly, the community! So if you drive down Lancaster Rd. and see rooms being rented, notify me, notify the city, notify somebody!
This was a win for our community as this motel sits across the street and next door to elementary schools, the Urban League, the VA hospital and homeowners. It has been unfortunate that a new school was built around this foolishness (as was Townview High School- but that's another post!) and young children have to walk past women scantily clad selling their bodies in broad daylight, drugs being sold out of the motel, countless suicides, committed in the motel, assaults, drug overdoses and the list of crimes goes on.
I have attended many of the hearings dealing with these "hot sheet" motels and it makes me tear up every time to hear the owners drop excuse after excuse and not own up to the fact they they contribute heavily to the blight and filth in our communities. I've heard it all from " we can't help it that these kind of people live in that neighborhood..to that didn't happen on my property (when clearly there are police reports 20 miles long for just a few months at the motel property's address). It is also refreshing each time that I witness ministers, young persons and seasoned persons of the neighborhood come down to speak out against the negative forces in their community and not be afraid to tell it how it T-I IS!!!!
There is hope and there are concerned citizens in every community who are fed up and learning how the process works and how they can help clean up their own community and neighborhood themselves! Once we begin to take interest in our neighborhood and educate ourselves on the process and get involved, then you would be amazed at the help that comes to our aid!
I have been asked many times what "hot-sheet" motel means and I can not take the credit for penning the phrase, that goes to Deputy Mayor Pro Tem Caraway. However it references the hot sheets that are found on the beds in these trashy motel rooms, where rooms are rented by the half hour and hourly.
The word is out and the motels that are not good neighbors have all gotten the memo that they MAY be next! But it will take concerned citizens to step up and take action to get the ball rolling! Yes crime has been around a long time and yes crime will continue to be around a long time, but as the drug houses come down and the filthy motels go down and crime is driven out of our communities to make room for economic development- then hope continues to carry on through the lives of the children growing up in our community.
I attended a hearing yesterday for yet another motel in Oak Cliff and this was the first one I'd attended where the motel owner was an African American. Let me just say that I was not only embarrassed, offended and in shock, but it was a scene indescribable!
I would hope that every eye that has opportunity to read these words would begin to take active interest in the community that you live and take some step towards producing positive progress!

With pink representing many different things to many different people and standing for causes such as breast cancer....
is this really the way to go to reduce the inmate population???
Tell me your thoughts..I certainly have plenty running rampant in my mind..but due to the late hour and me being under the influence of heavy meds (trying to kick this bronchitis) I will defer for now...
However, I will say this..if the solution is that simple, then I say GO PINK!!!!

As I listened to the City Council meeting this morning and continue to listen...several thoughts have crossed my mind...
this morning some names were read aloud and voted on by the council for board appointments. Several of the names I recognized as players that have bounced from board to board since I was a young girl. The younger generation has got to begin to participate in the process! While I understand that we are young professionals trying to make an earnest living and don't have the luxury of a schedule that allows us to go down to City Hall on Wednesday's and voice our concerns, you should participate (in some shape, form or fashion) when you can.
The City Council meetings are broadcast on WRR-FM (101.1) live every 2nd and 4th Wednesday starting and 9 a.m. (and thanks be to the new Mayor, they start on time for the most part) and can also be heard online through WRR's website, http://www.wrr101.com/. You may also watch the council meetings if you have Time Warner Cable, at 9 a.m. on EVERY Wednesday on Dallas City Channel 16. There are also several rebroadcasts of the show throughout the week on the same channel. Council committee meetings are also broadcast on Channel 16.
SIDEBAR: If you can make it by on a Wednesday, even if just for an early or late lunch break, it normally promises to entertain you at the least..don't forget your popcorn! ;)
You may also check out the upcoming council agenda (or the agenda for any other board, council committee or commission) online at http://www.dallascityhall.com/. If you see an item of interest, be sure to check out the meeting or go down to City Hall and sign up to speak on the issue. You are also welcome to come and sit in on our Park Board meetings on Thursday's on the 6th floor of City Hall- we meet tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. :)
The council voted this morning to authorize a program/ partnership between DISD and the DPD to teach young students about domestic violence and how to deal with family violence. I discussed with many of you my concerns last year regarding this issue and it seems this year is starting off much the same...with domestic violence issues. The case in Tyler where Christopher McCuin murdered his girlfriend, cut out parts of her body and possibly could have eaten some of her flesh. The sad case in South Carolina of Marisha Jeter, the young cheerleader killed by an ex- boyfriend and his wife. It appears locally and in other states we have begun the year with deaths as a result of domestic violence issues. Ladies, we have got to begin to have our best interests at heart! We sometimes love easy and hard that it hurts and hinders us in the end! The signs are normally there and we ignore them for many different reasons! Let us resolve to also keep our mental health in tact this year and beyond and engage in healthy relationships with our family members, significant others and friendships!
